The cushion cover fastens with a zipper, the inner cushion is removable. The inner cushion is filled with bamboo batting. *** Did you know that seahorses are monogamous, having one fixed partner. Another distinctive feature of seahorses is that after the mating dance, the female releases her eggs into the male's brood pouch. The male fertilizes them and broods the eggs for the next 2-3 weeks. The eggs attach to the mucous membrane of the male seahorse's brood pouch, which supplies them with oxygen and nutrients much like a mammal's placenta supplies a fetus. After hatching, the fry remain in the brood pouch for a while longer. Once the fry are sufficiently developed, the male wraps his tail around an algae stem and releases the fry into the sea. From that moment, the tiny creatures begin their independent life. Nowadays seahorses are at risk of extinction. 38 species of seahorse are listed in the Red Data Book. The rapid decline in numbers is caused by mass harvesting of seahorses from the sea, whether by net, dynamite, or cyanide poisoning. Many seahorses die after getting caught in shrimp nets. Seahorse habitats are threatened by water pollution, dredging works, and coastal construction. They are caught for food, used in folk medicine, sold to aquarists, dried and sold as souvenirs to tourists.
