Patchwork rug DANCE FESTIVAL (100 x 100 cm)

This patchwork rug is a copy of the rug I sewed as a gift to Estonia for the EV100 (Estonia's 100th birthday) project "Patchwork Rug 100. My Estonia today." The only difference is in the stripes of the skirts of the dancing girls in the centre of the rug. The first 4 photos are of the rug for sale. The last 10 photos are from the touring exhibition and from the rug sewn for EV100. The story of my rug: SONG AND DANCE CELEBRATION. In addition to their striking cleverness and business sense, Estonians are known as a nation of song and dance. There is nothing equal in the whole world to our tradition of song and dance celebrations. Thanks to it, folk costumes are still popular here, and we have high-level choral singing and a folk-dance heritage. In Estonia there are choirs and folk-dance groups in every school and village society right from the first years of school. My patchwork rug is a tribute to our song and dance celebration tradition, to folk costumes, and to all those dedicated choir and dance leaders and composers who keep it all alive and at a high level for the whole nation and the world! The rug is sewn from linen fabric. In the pattern I used 52 different cotton striped fabrics, the striped patterns of folk skirts from 52 different Estonian communities. In the corners of the rug are eight-pointed stars, symbols of joy and good luck. The striped fabrics, starting from the yellow at the top and going clockwise: 1. Muhu yellow, Muhu orange, Lüganuse, Väike-Maarja brown, Urvaste, Põltsamaa, Märjamaa, Karksi (2), Maarja-Magdaleena, Järva-Madise, Kambja, Pärnu, Kihelkonna; 2. Helme, Viljandi, Hanila, Räpina, Pühalepa, Noarootsi, Ambla, Kihnu, Hargla, Hageri red, Keila, Rapla blue, Jaani; 3. Haljala, Türi, Rapla blue (2), Kõpu, Äksi, Peetri (2), Viru-Nigula, Karja, Ilumäe, Jõhvi, Urvaste (2), Võnnu; 4. Märjamaa green, Pöide, Jüri green, Risti, Nõo, Hageri green, Reigi, Pilistvere, Iisaku, Koeru, Lääne-Nigula, Kadrina, Viru-Jaagupi. About the Patchwork Rug 100 project: This is a project where 100 sewists set out to sew a patchwork rug on the theme "My Estonia today" for the 100th birthday of the Republic of Estonia. Each sewed one rug measuring 100 x 100 cm. Together we made 100 rugs with a total length of 100 m. A photo album was compiled from the rugs, and the project received help through Hooandja (a crowdfunding platform) to get it printed. The publication contains a photo of each rug, the rug's name, the story of how it came to be and an introduction to its author. The 100 rugs made within the project were presented at touring exhibitions across Estonia. Today all 100 patchwork rugs are in Tartu, at the Estonian National Museum.
